1. Apply once (create an account and complete the form)
To start, create a Dogs Trust account and complete their application form. This is the one formal application Dogs Trust asks you to submit: the form collects information about your home, lifestyle, and the types of dogs you're interested in (favourites help show your preferences). Dogs Trust treat this as your active application while they search on your behalf.
2. Choose a rehoming centre (you'll be assessed by that centre)
When applying you'll be asked to select a rehoming centre to manage your application. The centre you pick will review your application and compare it against the dogs in their care (it doesn't have to be your nearest centre, but you should be able to travel there within a few days if a match is found).
3. Dogs Trust will contact you (usually within seven days)
After you submit your application, Dogs Trust aim to contact you by phone or email within seven days to discuss your application and preferences. They make two attempts to reach you; if they can't contact you after that they may close the application and invite you to reapply when ready. Expect an initial phone/email chat as part of the early process.
4. Your application stays open for three months while they search for a match
Dogs Trust keep your application active for three months and review it against all suitable dogs at your chosen centre during that time. You do not need to reapply during those three months; if no suitable match is found you'll be told and invited to reapply so your information stays current.
5. Favouriting dogs and why that helps
You can favourite dogs in your Dogs Trust account. You won't be able to apply directly for a single dog, but favouriting shows the team the kinds of dogs you like and helps guide the matching process - so keep favourites updated if your preferences change.
6. When a match is found: contact, meetings and checks
If the centre identifies a suitable dog, they'll invite you to meet them at the rehoming centre. Some dogs may need several meetings to be sure you're compatible. Dogs Trust may also arrange a home check (in-person or sometimes virtual) to confirm your house and garden are appropriate and secure; if you already own dogs they may accept a vet reference instead of a home visit.
7. Adoption fee and support after rehoming
When you adopt, Dogs Trust usually charge a rehoming fee that helps cover vaccinations, microchipping, neutering (where applicable) and ongoing care. After adoption, Dogs Trust provide support and follow-up advice - they offer ongoing behaviour and care support for rehomed dogs.
8. Why a dog you saw might no longer appear on Dogs Trust
Listings can change rapidly. A dog you saw on our site or on Dogs Trust may have been reserved, rehomed, or temporarily removed; our listings are updated regularly but not always in real time. If a dog disappears, keep your Dogs Trust application active and your favourites up to date - the rehoming team will contact you if a suitable match appears.
